A few years ago I took these photos of an obscure rock art site near Helena, Montana. They looked like ocher smears. Unimpressed, I ignored them. Late last night I accidentally pushed the wrong key and these photos popped up. I started playing with my new color enhancement feature and look what happened. Very sophisticated rock art. A fish appears with a huge eye and three- dimensional scales fading to black at the tail fin.
Beside the fish is a thunderbird. Note how the artist uses the curved rock to enhance the eye and the beak. Stripes in the rock create feathered flowing movement. Some locations reflect a ceremonially expressed linkage with the thunderbirds, the rain-bringers who ensured good growth of grass and hence abundant game

I have studied art, rock art and pictographs for years yet I have never seen Native American ocher rock art painting that is this sophisticated and detailed. I am so curious about the origin.
